The Sixth Annual Defense Attaches Technology Forum

Transformation is a key component of both U.S. and allied defense strategy.  Defense transformation is a continuing process that not only anticipates the future but also seeks to create it.  This year’s forum addressed the scope of transformation and innovation related to strategies, joint concepts and capabilities. We explored key components within transformation in the context of technology, processes and programs with emphasis on U.S. military capabilities that can work in concert with multinational partners.

Since transformation is more than just the acquisition and implementation of new equipment and technologies, this year’s forum also focused on how militaries and organizational leaders must incorporate new types of creative thinking with an emphasis on concept development, experimentation, and intelligent risk-taking. Key to this process is the increasing demand for various governmental entities and agencies to work together, as well as the need for allied countries to more closely cooperate through leveraging new technologies and operational concepts to create coalition advantage against adversaries and global threats. Future military operations must be a joint, network-centric force in order meet the realities of the emerging way of war and address the rapidly evolving global security challenges.

This was the 6th annual forum developed and presented by The Catevo Group in partnership with the Defense Attachés Association (DAA) of Washington, DC. The corps is comprised of over 100 nations with flag officers and senior officials accredited to DoD. Rear Admiral Michiel Hijmans, Netherlands Defense Attaché and Dean of the DAA Corps serves as the '07 Chairman.

“Transforming How We Think: Creating a Culture of Collaboration and Information Sharing”

Transformation requires a fundamental shift in the way we collaborate. What are some of the pressing lessons to be learned from industry, U.S. and allied governments and militaries – to foster and sustain a culture of collaboration? The risk of not sharing information is becoming more dangerously apparent. This panel explored examples of transformational cooperation and intelligence sharing within the U.S. and within multinational operations. Panelists also discussed current priorities for interagency collaboration, innovative examples of global information sharing (e.g. Sovereign Challenge) and other catalysts for increased collaboration.

"Transforming How We Fight: Changes in Land, Sea and Air Warfare"

In transforming the way we fight, the future force will be one that is more agile, expeditionary and lethal than the present one, and characterized by utilizing operational maneuver and precision effects capabilities. Additionally force transformation is dependant on the innovative development of joint warfighting concepts and new architectures, with increased emphasis on experimentation and simulation. In sea warfare, collaborative concepts such as the Thousand Ship Navy embody operations that seamlessly integrate with multinational partners.

From alternative energy vehicles and non-lethal weapons to precision air maneuvers, new concepts and innovation are driving defense transformation and industry must evolve rapidly to meet the challenges of today’s battlefield. This expert panel highlighted those capabilities and explored solutions.
